Carson :: 4 Years

Carson Ryley, you are such a joy!  You are growing into quite the little boy and it is so fun to watch your personality continue to blossom as you develop your interests.

Here's a snapshot of Carson at 4 years old:

  • Animated - Carson is enthusiastic and joyful about most things in life.  He wears his heart on his sleeve and gets so excited about the smallest of things.  I love hearing him running through the house shouting, "Mom!  Look at this!" :)
  • He loves Legos.  Like loves them.  When he goes to sleep at night, one of his lego creations and a few "guys" go on his dresser.  The first thing he does when he gets up in the morning is go straight to his dresser to get them and bring them downstairs.  He plays with Legos, creates little ships, and interchanges the different parts of the mini figures all. day. long.  If he's playing blocks, the Legos are with him.  If he's reading books, he's holding Legos.  When he leaves the house, they go with him.  We finally had to start a new rule that if he drops them in the car, they stay there until the car reaches its destination.  Too much reaching into the backseat was happening! :) I love watching his creative side come out through Legos.
  • He loves all things "bad guy" much to my dismay.  If he sees something with a sword, light saber, gun, you name it...he's interested.  He knows that his mother doesn't like guns, so he's gotten creative to tell me that his Lego guys are "just holding water squirters, mom"  or things like that.  He likes Star Wars, even though he has no idea what it is.  But big cousin Drew likes it so he does too!
  • Inquisitive.  He asks TONS of questions about how things work, why things are, etc.  He also likes to figure things out.  Out of nowhere a few weeks ago he started wondering about addition and subtraction.  Now, he frequently states things like 4-2 is 2 and is so proud that he's figured it out.
  • Loves preschool.  He's only been going for a few weeks, but he asks every day if he gets to go and looks forward to his time there.  He's made lots of friends and I think he likes the social piece of it the most.
  • Every night he says the same prayer:  "Dear God, thank you for mommy, daddy, Carson and Hudson.  Thank you for Jenna and great grandpa who are up in Heaven.  We love you Jesus, Amen."  It's the sweetest thing.
  • He is super helpful around the house and will almost always do what he's asked.  If I need something like a diaper for Hudson or a towel for a spill, he's always eager to go get what I need.  When we come in from being outside, he loves to be the first to the door then hold it open for the rest of us.  "I'm being a gentleman, mommy!"
  • He always picks a flower when he sees it and brings it to his mama.
  • Loves his little brother.  Hudson is ornery and can be a challenge to play with at times.  He loves to steal Carson's toys and push his buttons, but Carson does a pretty good job of being patient.  He will sometimes even try to distract Hudson with another toy or game before getting upset.  However, there are also plenty of times where he just cries and gets upset when Hudson picks on him.  But we're making progress! :)
  • He hates to be alone.  If you don't tell him where you're going, like out to the garage to get something out of the freezer, and he realizes you're no longer in the kitchen, he freaks out.  Like starts bawling and yelling until he finds you.  I have learned that whenever I am going out of his sight, I just tell him where I'm going and what I'll be doing.  It saves a lot of stress for him!  He also doesn't like to be in his room alone.  Bedtime and nap time can be difficult because he wants someone to stay with him in his room.  It usually takes coaxing and him knowing exactly what we are going to be doing downstairs, but he will usually stay in his room and go to sleep.
  • He naps about every other day.  Most days he spends an hour of quiet time in his room, and about half of the time he falls asleep during that time.  If he does sleep, it's never more than an hour
  • He loves books, especially books about Legos :) He will flip through the same book over and over again if he finds it intriguing.  He will also spend hours looking at the free Lego magazine that comes in the mail.
  • He always wants to know what we are doing next.  If we're on a walk, he'll ask what we're doing next.  When I answer, he asks, "and what's after that?" "And then what's after that?" On and on and on until I stop answering ;)
  • He is 3'8" (99th percentile) and 49 pounds (99th percentile).  He wears mostly XS/size 5 clothes.  It's sad to not be shopping in the toddler section for him anymore!
  • His favorite foods are cucumbers, meat of any kind, watermelon, sweet corn, really any fruit or vegetable, egg sandwiches with mayo, peanut butter and jelly (his lunch of choice most days!), donuts, and he loves ice cream.
It's been SUCH a fun four years and we can't wait to continue to watch you grow.  We love you Carson Ryley!
